Sparta Environmental Commission pursues trails grant, addresses environmental initiatives

Environmental Commission · Meeting of June 11, 2026

NJ SPARTA — Sparta environmental commission pursues Sussex County trail funding and advances master plan reexamination. The Trails Committee submitted a competitive application for $20,000 to $25,000 in Sussex County grant funding to support Iron Horse Trail Section 1 development, including gate installation, signage, and corridor clearing from Sunset Inn Road to Demerest, with decision expected in early summer. Chair Neil Sauerwein reported the Master Plan Subcommittee continues its Re-examination work, anticipating completion in September.

The commission is pursuing a streamlined environmental resource inventory version for inclusion in the Master Plan following the denial of its Sustainable Jersey grant application, attributed by the grant program to insufficient public engagement.
