Sparta Council Eyes Zero Capital Budget to Address Budget Crisis

NJ SPARTA — Sparta Council confronts critical $3 million 2026 budget shortfall amid health care cost escalation. In a special session, Township Manager Jim Zepp proposed elimination of the $1.8 million capital improvement plan and widespread spending restrictions to address a nine to ten percent projected budget increase. CFO Dawn Krumpfer identified approximately $742,000 in additional operating expense reductions.
The Council considered eliminating the $275,000 veterans tax lookback benefit to close the remaining deficit. Manager Zepp set March 26 as a target date to introduce the draft budget, though a nine to ten percent municipal tax increase remains inevitable even with the proposed cuts.
