NJ SPARTA — Environmental Commission plans Earth Day event, monitors groundwater concerns. Chair Neil Sauerwein and the commission approved prior meeting minutes and advanced planning for an April 25 Earth Day celebration with 39 student volunteers from Sparta High School and activities from North Jersey environmental organizations, including recycling games, pollinator planting, face painting, and a native plant sale. The commission expressed concerns about a proposed water extraction project in neighboring Andover that would pump 3 to 3.1 million gallons monthly from the Germany Flats Aquifer near Sparta's border, discussing potential impacts on local groundwater.
The commission also confirmed the township council's approval of an ANJEC Open Space Stewardship Grant for bat boxes and is pursuing a Sussex County Trails Grant of approximately $1,500.
